Martin & MacArthur's craftsmen have been the premier makers of koa furniture and beautiful home accessories for more than 50 years. Irving Jenkins, author of a book on Hawaiian furniture and Hawai'i's cabinetmakers, calls "Martin & MacArthur the single biggest and lasting influence on the wood-crafting industry in the 20th century."
The Hawaii craftsmen of Martin & MacArthur designed the first solid Koa wood watches over a decade ago. We hand-select highly-figured Koa wood from our private stock harvested from dead or fallen trees in the Big Island. Today, we feature over 30 innovative styles of Koa wood watches for every taste, style and price preference.

Nice store. I thought their wood watches were stunning. I ended up buying one on vacation and bringing back to the Midwest. It was crazy the amount of attention the watch drew. I probably got complements at least once every other week for years. Unfortunately, after a year or 2, the watch started just coming apart. The crystal and hands of the watch would just come off and a pretty regular basis (happened at least 10 times). I eventually couldn't find the hands of the watch that fell off at some restaurant and I gave up on the watch. Beautiful watch, but it wasn't build to last very long.

Summary: Bad customer service. Save yourself the trouble and visit a different location like International Marketplace, or a different brand entirely. I came here looking for a koa pen as a gift for a friend. My wife and I started looking for a pen with a nice curly pearlescent wood grain. One of the clerks came over to help. I explained that we were looking for a pen with a nice grain.
As we looked through all the boxes on the display she opened a cabinet to show me some alternatives. We went through a couple more and as I questioned their quality (some of the wood was not attached properly and spun freely) she became more pushy. It got bad enough that my wife felt uncomfortable and walked away. Still not seeing a grain/pen I liked I asked if I could see some more but she told me there were none.
At that point I reopened the cabinet to point to all the other boxes underneath. I didn't even reach in, just pointed but she freaked out and scolded me saying I could go in there (just a few minutes after she opened it and let me before). I took a moment to think about what was going on. I politely told her thank you but I will spend my money elsewhere.
She snarkily said "that's fine, you can go do that!" On my way out a different clerk asked if everything was ok. As I started to explain with "No, I don't understand why she has to be so rude." she began yelling from across the store mid sentence. At that point my wife and I just left. The staff at the International Marketplace were far more helpful (not pushy) and knowledgeable. They knew exactly what I was looking for and helped me find a great pen for my friend. Save yourself a headache and go there instead.

We purchased a ring at this location, but later decided that it was not quite what we were looking for. The following week, when in Ka'anapali, we went to another Martin & MacArthur who needed to call the original location to verify the transaction. We were told that a refund could not be done because when purchasing an item on sale, all sales are final.
We were never told that purchasing anything in the store on sale would be a FINAL sale. The item wasn't even on clearance or being discontinued. I could understand those types of sales as being final. Be aware that purchasing any item at these stores would be a FINAL sale. We were never told that. I may have decided to think twice about my purchase.

We came here just to look real quick after dinner. It's a really cool store with lots of Koa wood jewelry and furniture. I saw that they had fish hooks and I knew I had to get one. I watched Moana on the flight to Kauai and I really wanted one. They had some really fancy ones that were made from Koa wood and old fossilized mammoth and whale bones.
They were on sale, but I knew they would probably be super expensive, even with the sale. I looked around some more and found that they had more fish hooks at reasonable prices. Some were made out of wood and some out of fish bone. I loved the white fish bone one so I decided to get it. The employees there were super friendly and showed us a few things like their stretchy wood bracelet and necklaces, and a turtle necklace that my Aunt almost bought.
I decided pretty quickly what I wanted and checked it out. My white fish bone fish hook necklace was a little under fifty dollars which wasn't bad. When we got back to our condo I tried it on. It had an adjustable fish bone ball in the back to help you tighten or loosen the necklace so it would fit perfectly. I really love my fish bone necklace and this store.

This gorgeous gallery is in the Kuki'ula shopping center, across from Tortilla Republic. We noticed it last night after dinner at Eating House 1849 and checked it out after brunch this morning at Tortilla Republic. Everything in the gallery is Hawaiian made. There are beautiful watches made of Koa wood. There are clocks of Koa cut in the shapes of Hawaiian quilt patterns, wooden boxes, marquetry, art glass, jewelery and much more.
The quality is high. Galleries like this gladden my heart. Of course a couple of pieces of glass from Chris Lowry and Christopher Richards of Hot Island Glass, glassblowers in Makawao, Maui caught my eye, one a bowl and one a large plate, the same Marigold pattern, a luminous blue that draws you in as you look at it. We'll be here another week. We'll see how strong my resistance is. Later: well, not even a day.
After dinner tonight we stopped by again so I could show it to Alan, who was as smitten by it as I was. My darling bought the bowl for me for Mother's Day and my birthday. What a guy! It will be shipped home at the end of the week.
