Door Store The Door Store got its start in Greenwich Village in New York City in 1953, when a group of enterprising young friends purchased hundreds of wholesale hollow-core doors and outfitted them with legs to then sell as tables and desks. After several years in New York, Natalia Karpovich moved home and established the Cambridge branch of the business. The Door Store has become a Cambridge fixture, moving to its current location in 1971.

We no longer make tables out of doors, though we still field plenty of inquiries, customers are invited to stop by to see our large selection of table-tops, legs and bases, and browse our showroom for design ideas.

I came to The Door Store to ask them to build me a desk. Their knowledge of the different options of woods and designs available to meet my needs was exemplary. I placed an order and then after leaving realized that I have chemical sensitivities to fresh glues and stains, and called to ask them to see if we could work out a solution. They were respectful and knowledgeable, and quickly came up with a solution which eliminated any risk of triggering my sensitivity.

I would (and will) buy from them in the future, and highly recommend them. They are good people with a great knowledge base who love their work and care about their customers.

I wandered in while walking through Cambridge and found this store to be a delight. I had been looking for shelving to fit an exact height under a window and was able to give my ideal specifications to get two custom shelves built. They are beautiful and fit perfectly. I worked with Dawn who helped me understand a few of the technical details to get my vision to come to life. Highly recommend The Door Store!

We're so appreciative of Dawn, Mario, Ava and Sadie, as well as everyone else we encountered at the Door Store. The whole team was a dream to work with and we couldn't be happier with our custom table and new bar height swivel stools. They helped us pick from an assortment of beautiful table tops which they then cut down to size. They were incredibly knowledgeable with helping us choose a design for custom-length legs.

From start to finish we always felt like we were in great hands and got exactly what we wanted. They were communicative and thoughtful in all our interactions. We look forward to spending many years enjoying our lovingly made GORGEOUS furniture. Cannot recommend highly enough!

BEWARE OF MANAGER. she lacks any ounce of customer friendly support. Other employees I interacted with were very helpful. It's a shame. as this store has a good reputation. Ownership needs to promote another good employee to manager and replace the existing one or they will continue to lose sales. Manager approached a small table-top project with a "we can't do that" and "it will take 6-8 weeks minimum" attitude.

She then said it could not be done within 10 days (big difference between 8 weeks and 10 days). P.s. when I called to see if they were open on a Sunday she said don't come at 4:45pm (as they close at 5pm). Shop elsewhere. until they replace existing manager.

The Door Store is an amazing local business. They made a custom cherry butcher block dining table for us and is just gorgeous. Their prices are very reasonable as well. A tad higher than Crate & Barrel/West Elm/etc, but the product is way nicer, made locally, and the wood is ethically sourced. The Door Store also delivered our table a week ahead of schedule. Lastly, their customer service is phenomenal; when we had a small issue with our table, they fixed it promptly and were easy to work with. We will definitely be repeat customers!

We LOVE the custom coffee that Mario built. We had a specific design in mind, and Mario brought it to life. He is very knowledgable about different woods, and took the time to show us our options. Communicating with him over email was very helpful, as we went back and forth about some of the elements. He also explained different combinations of woods that got the table into our price range. 100% recommend Mario and the Door Store for high quality furniture and professional communication.

We just got a beautiful maple butcher block kitchen table to replace one we bought here over 25 years ago! The delivery and assembly were quick, professional, and safe. Photo attached.

I've had great experiences at the Door store! They made me a beautiful butcher block coffee table that is the highlight of my living room. They also helped me with some other woodworking projects that I cant undertake myself in my tiny city apartment. They definitely did not need to help out there - but Dawn is amazing and super helpful at everything!

If you need a table made out of wood, do NOT go to Ikea or Article or West Elm or CB2 or Overstock. These guys will hook you up locally with something that looks 10 times better, lasts 100 times longer and is only slightly more expensive (if so). Both times, they delivered FAR ahead of the due date. I literally cannot recommend them enough.

I made a relatively last-minute decision to use butcher block instead of stone for our peninsula and went to the Door Store for help. They were incredibly patient as I worked through the size we needed, as well as which finish is best/most practical for our family. They delivered weeks earlier than the other bids and the quality was beyond perfection.

I could not have been happier with the customer service and quality of goods -- Dawn in particular knew her stuff and was willing to help. Thanks, Door Store! This butcher block *makes* our kitchen.

We bought two desks and a dining room table from the door store and couldn't happier. Dawn amazing! She was super patient in answering all of our questions and helping us choose the furniture and arranging delivery. The desks and table are very high quality and look amazing.

I had an excellent experience purchasing a dining room table from Dawn and her colleagues. After scouring the internet for a high quality and well priced solid wood table, I was happy to find a fantastic selection available at the Door Store. Our stunning face-grain walnut table now makes a beautiful statement in our dining room. We couldn't be happier with the end result, as we know this piece will be in our family for a long time.

When I was a kid my parents bought a couple of desks and our main dining table here. I remember, because they were kinda big expensive purchases for my family but my mom was really proud of them. 25 years later, they are still using them, and they are still beautiful. My husband I actually adopted one of the desks. Recently, I finally decided I needed a grown up piece of furniture and had a desk made.

It was pretty painless, took about an hour. I picked out a piece of wood, a drawer, and some legs. When it was all said and done it was $600 but it is the most beautiful furniture I have ever owed and every day when I sit down to work, I feel joy!

The Door Store makes simple, beautiful custom furniture, and their service is fantastic. We just bought a wood slab coffee table and are thrilled with it. Because the piece of wood we selected is very irregular, the treatment process required much more labor than expected. We offered to cover the extra cost, but they declined. Earlier this year they made a beautiful butcher block table for us, and they allowed us to take home the chairs and test them out before cutting them down to size.

They do wonderful work and are very friendly and accommodating--the kind of quality and commitment you only get from a local business. I expect that we'll be buying from them for many years.

I just recently moved into my new apartment in somerville and I've been wanting a decent table for my eat in kitchen. Being the odd shape my kitchen is I wanted something small but unique and big enough for 4 people. Needless to say I couldn't find the "one" from the Internet. That's when I found the Door store. I walked by one evening and holy crap!

There were rows of wood slabs against the wall! The people here are fantastic! They're helpful and friendly and the workmanship is top notch! I bought a wonderful live edge table for my eat in kitchen and it is gorgeous. Sure it was a little pricey but at the same time this is a one of a kind custom piece of furniture.

I had the pleasure of partnering with the Door Store on a custom dining room table project. The 1.75 Maple top came out excellent and I was able to mount it to the custom made steel frame we built with no issues at all! The new table owners love it! I couldn't have done it without the help of the Door Store! Thanks again! - Mike from Artisan Grill and Smoker

Amazing service. We have owned a large desk (best desk ever) and shelves from door store for several years. We needed to remove part of the desk for a move, and Dawn came over to our house to show us how to do it properly so we would know how to do it next time. Nobody else offers this level of service!

This is a great place for finding custom wood furniture. It is definitely more expensive than Ikea, but if you looking for something specific, this is the place to go. The staff are super helpful, patient, and friendly. Best experience at a furniture store so far! However, because I am on a budget and I am looking for more modern decor, I ended not buying anything during this visit.

I got off to a rough start with these folks but in the end they produced a quality walnut butcher block for my kitchen island. They missed two deadlines that delayed the completion of our kitchen. Dawn at the door store did a nice job of keeping me informed and in the end, the butcher block came out perfect. I am pleased.

I actually had no idea what this place was, and probably wouldn't have ever arrived here if I'd just seen the name listed. Fortunately, the large windows at the front of my store allow the wares to be easily seen while driving by. This caught my eye and caused me to stop in. (I learned after talking to the employees that the name "Door Store" was a reference to furniture in the 50s/ 60s often being made out of doors, but I'm not sure how many people would realize this and get past the gut instinct that this place perhaps sells doors.) So I'd been on a hunt for paper lanterns to replace the old shades hanging from my living room ceiling. I'd stopped by a few other places, but all of the designs had been over the top colorful or with screen printed patterns.

I was driving down Mass Ave somewhat resigned that I wasn't going to find the light covers I was looking for when suddenly the Door Store appeared. They have a pretty good selection of simple and stylized lanterns of different shapes and sizes. (Though some of the larger sizes are not kept in stock and require being special ordered.) I found the perfect ones, and bought 4 of them for just $60.

I was also really impressed with the selection of wood tabletops and other interesting wood items around the store. While I wasn't looking for those things on this visit, it is great to know there is a local place to head to for high quality table tops for a custom project. The staff was friendly and available, but not intrusive at all. This place is a great find that will be a first stop for my next custom home project!

Last summer, I finally felt like I would stay around town for awhile (after having lived around Boston for years) and traded in my hardware store rubberwood table for something nice. I've walked past the Door Store hundreds of times and finally went in. It's a lot of fun looking at all the table tops and legs, but ultimately, it comes down to how much money you want to spend.

Go in there with a budget so you won't panic when you see something gorgeous that requires all your rent/food money. I got a steeply discounted table top (I was able to pick the veneer/finish) with metal legs, and it ran around $250 (cannot remember exact amount, but definitely under $300). (NB: Ask about the discount table tops, I like mine.

Nothing wrong with it, just not as sexy or heavy as the full-price ones.) Table was delivered to me by a friendly employee from the store. More than six months later, I called asking if they would take a look at the table because it was having issues in my unevenly-floored apartment. (This wasn't a fault of the table which was solid and nicely built.

I didn't call sooner because I'd been out of town and maybe I didn't really notice any issues until I started to use a desk at my office and realized why I felt kind of distracted working at my table at home.) I am so impressed that Andrew, the carpenter, came over a day or two after I called and diagnosed the problem (different legs might be better for my apartment situation); it was resolved a day or two after that. That's speed and service you can only get from a local business.

I was completely shocked at how efficient, polite and generally accommodating the Door Store was. They gave me an extremely generous rate on the new table support, and this just made me so incredibly happy and relieved. I would have definitely paid full price; I felt that taken care of. Would definitely do business again with the Door Store. Super impressed.

I buy almost everything online, but if it's going to be a table/desk where you spend a lot of time, make it something that won't fall apart slowly and start to make you crazy, something that you won't want to junk when you move. While online buying might save you some money on the item initially, it'll cost you in lower quality and I can promise that no one from Target is going to help you fix it when it inevitably fails.

Out of the many stores in the Cambridge/Somerville area that specialize in custom furniture, this is by far the best. I came into the store with my boyfriend, looking to build a desk from the fantastic selection of customizable (and affordable) options. However, I left with something even more special. They also had a selection of reclaimed wood table tops.

I was able to purchase one for a great price and choose the style of legs I wanted attached. Now I have a unique and striking desk (and really, just a wonderful piece of furniture, period). The staff was incredibly helpful and friendly, and even agreed to hold the piece of wood I was interested in, so I could go home and measure my apartment. When I came back to purchase it, they were ready to go ahead and put the legs on so I could take it home immediately! I have never had such great service at a furniture store! I will definitely go back next time I am in need of new furniture!

The Door Store specializes in table tops of all sizes, woods and finishes. From those you customize a piece of furniture. We went for desks with two metal file cabinets and a cherry veneer table top. This was a much cheaper and better solution than many of the desks I saw in other furniture stores. They have other wood furniture as well. The help was friendly, considerate and knowledgable. I would definitely shop here first for any table needs.

I bought two desks from the Door Store and was very satisfied. The quality of the veneer is incredible- I didn't know veneer could look that good! The pricing was very clear and well explained. The Door Store staff assembled the desks in my house and they look fantastic. It'd be hard to tell the difference between them and solid cherry unless you looked very very carefully.

I can't say enough good things about the Door Store. I bought my desk there 10 years ago (!) when I first moved to Cambridge as a grad student, and it's served me well through ~10 moves. I took the desk back one year ago to have a keyboard tray installed, and the staff were great. I just took it in again to have an extension added (to make it into an 'L' shape), and it was an easy process. Yes, you pay more than you would for a Target or a Staples desk, but you support a local business and its awesome employees AND you get a piece of furniture for life that looks great.

This is a cozy little furniture store specializing in hand built wood items. I have always loved looking in the window in the evenings because they have many paper lanterns hanging in the store that give the place a lovely glow. Anyway, the service is just right--people are there to help you with questions or ordering, but they certainly don't try to push anything on you.

The pricing is fair, it reflects the quality materials, but it's not too expensive. Everything is pretty simple, right angle kind of stuff. Nothing ornate or over the top. And then there's a couple cute kid's themed lanterns in the front (pigs with wings, etc) and small baskets and chairs. A nice little store between Harvard and Central Square. Worth a visit.
