Backyard Sheds is a family owned and operated business with locations in Selkirk and Burnt Hills, NY. We also offer a display-only location in Schodack Landing, NY. We've been selling custom-built, Amish-made storage sheds and gazebos for over 24 yrs. Our product lines include SmartSide sheds, vinyl sided sheds, horse barns, run-ins, chicken coops, modular garages, pool houses, wood and vinyl gazebos.
We've been in the shed business for so long that we sometimes forget what it's like when you're getting your very first storage shed. It may seem like a simple procedure, but we've found it can be a bit overwhelming for first time buyers. To help you get the most from your investment, we encourage you to read through this beginners' guide and consider each of the questions we pose.

We source from our own Amish builder in Lancaster, PA. We have been together and have enjoyed a great relationship throughout the years. Town's all have different regulations, contacting the building dept. is the best way of finding out what they will require of you.

Purchaser beware! I went into the office to inquire about purchasing an 8x10 shed. I was told there was a 5% surcharge due to materials if I ordered one BUT if I chose one off the the lot they were 5% less because it didn't have to be ordered. Found one on the lot that I wanted to purchase. The sign inside said $2,197. Ryan the owner said yes that was the correct price. Went into the office to put down the deposit to hold it and he charged me $2,775.
He took my $300 deposit and handed me the receipt. It was a good thing I looked at the balance. When I questioned it he said "well that's the price on the website." I said but that's not the price on the sign in the shed." He said "well it was a mistake. That wasn't including the 5% surcharge for materials." I said" well, you said there wasn't an additional 5% because I was taking one off the lot. Right?" He said "yes but that's not the right price because as you can see on my computer screen for the website that shed goes for $2,775." I asked for a refund of my deposit, at which time he assured me that I would be back after I searched around and found that he had the best prices.
I can assure him that I won't do business with somebody who doesn't stand by their word and isn't transparent if indeed there was a mistake. I find it to be very unprofessional to say and show one price and without telling the customer there was a "mistake" and charging another in hopes that they would not realize the difference of $600. Not good business policy. Purchaser beware!.

They are the best people to deal with. 2 years ago I purchased a garage from them. I was told it would be 8 weeks. It came in 2 weeks early. Even the building inspector loved it. Perfectly matched the house and quality. Now my daughter just bought a new house and we went right back. The people there are very knowledgeable about their products and have great prices. We ordered my daughters shed and it will match the house. I won't go anywhere else.

Ryan was super easy to work with and helped me navigate all of the options (there were a lot) to help me get exactly what I needed. What surprised me the most was how much better their prices were than just about every other place I looked for similar quality. Not sure if I'll need another shed ever again because this one is built to last but if I do or can recommend backyard sheds, I will!

Ironically, our transaction with this business started with a direct quote of "we like to underpromise and over deliver." Unfortunately our entire experience can be summed up by saying it was the complete opposite. We were referred to them by a trusted contractor (who will no longer be referring them). Communication was terrible, except of course when it came to getting our money.
I had hoped multiple times that I had been dealing with an hourly employee who didn't care much and was shocked to find out instead that it was the owners. If you enjoy supporting businesses who value their customers, shop elsewhere. The product itself is fine but not worth what we went through to get it.

I have purchased several sheds in the recent few years for my principal and investment homes and each time I have been most pleased. The sheds were all custom designed requiring an extra level of attention and service which Fred & Sue expertly provided and the end results were excellent.
