I am a European-trained traditional upholsterer living in the upper Midwest. My work reimagines eighteenth-century techniques in a modern American context. I design furniture that reveals the foundational elements of the craft so that they become central to the design. As I reduce design and form to their essentials, I strengthen the observer's connection to the craft and materials. For example, stitching that has a structural purpose becomes decorative. The plain upholsterer's tacks when left visible add a sense of purpose.

I have a sorta hip, modern sofa that looks pretty cool, but construction is really poor. I think just about every button has come off. I brought it over each time one detached, and they made a much stronger repair than the original attachment. At most they charged me a few dollars, usually they didn't charge me anything! Super friendly and didn't seem put out at all. I will be back to have a different couch re-upholstered someday.

We are so fortunate to have found The Straight Thread. The furniture they have repaired and recovered for us is better than new. Everyone is conscientious, patient, and incredibly helpful--plus they have a wonderful eye for color and design. We do not plan to buy any new furniture again, because the quality cannot match what they do. Thank you all!
